Grow your own avocado plant

7 02 2013

Did you know that you can use the seed from an avocado to grow your own avocado tree? Check this out!

  1. Wash your avocado seed.
  2. Secure toothpicks into the seed so that they sit out horizontally.
  3. Suspend the seed with the heavy side down over a glass of water. About 3cm of the seed should be sitting in water.
  4. Place the seed out of direct sunlight and top up the water as needed.
  5. In 2-6 weeks, roots and stem should start to sprout.
  6. When the stem is 15 to 18cm long, cut it back to about 8cm in length.
  7. When the stem has grown leaves again and the roots are thick, plant it in a pot with half the seed exposed
  8. Water the plant lightly and frequently, with an occasional deep soak. The soil should be moist but not saturated.
  9. Make sure it’s getting plenty of sunlight.
  10. When the stem is 30cm long, cut it back to 15cm. This will encourage new shoots.
  11. Enjoy your own avocado tree!

Homemade Hair Treatments

22 11 2012

Did you know that eggs can be very good to treat all types of hair?  And what about avocado?

In your kitchen you have plenty of vitamins for your skin, hair and all type of beauty care. Check out these recipes that you can easily make up at home.

Not only they are green but they will save you money!

Eggs for everyone

eggs hair care

For normal hair –> use the entire egg

For oily hair –> use egg whites only

For dry and brittle hair –> use egg yolks only

Use 1/2 cup of whichever egg mixture is appropriate for you and apply to clean, damp hair. If there isn’t enough egg to coat scalp and hair, use more as needed. Leave on for 20 minutes, rinse with cool water (to prevent egg from “cooking”) and shampoo hair.

Tips and tricks: Whole egg and egg yolks treatments can be applied once a month. Egg whites treatment can be applied every two weeks.

Avocado temptation for damaged and fuzzy hair

Avocado treatmentTo Use: Mash up half an avocado and massage into clean, damp hair. Let sit for 15 minutes before rinsing with water.

For deeper hydration, combine mashed avocado with 1 to 2 Tbsp. of a hydrating ingredient, like sour cream, egg yolks or mayonnaise.

When: This treatment can be applied every two weeks.

Honey sweet honey for dry or damaged hair

Hot water, sun overexposure, flat iron can make your hair very dry. Honey can help you to hydrate it. It works as a natural humectant, which means it attracts and locks in moisture.

honey

To Use: Massage approximately 1/2 cup of honey into clean, damp hair, let sit for 20 minutes, then rinse with warm water. You can also add 1 to 2 Tbsp. of olive oil to loosen the honey for easier application.

For extremely sun-damaged hair, try mixing honey with 1 to 2 Tbsp. of a protein-rich ingredient, like avocado or egg yolk, which will help replenish the keratin protein bonds that UV rays attack.

When: This treatment can be applied once a month.
